According to APICS, the CPIM program has educated more than 75,000 manufacturing professionals on essential terminology, concepts, and strategies related to demand management, procurement and supplier planning, material requirements planning, capacity requirements planning, sales and operations planning, master scheduling, performance measurements, supplier relationships, quality control, and continuous improvement.
The Certified in Production and Inventory Management (CPIM) certification is essential for professionals involved in:
Note: CPIM is about production and inventory management. It is NOT about logistics. Experience in the field of logistics may not contribute much to exam success.
Candidates must pass all five exams for the following modules in order to earn the CPIM designation:
The CPIM exams measure your performance based on a scaled score between 265 and 330. 300 is the minimum needed to pass the exam (which roughly equals 70%). Based on our experience, a score between 310 and 315 is considered a good one. Although not all of the questions count towards your score (some questions are for beta testing purpose), since there is no way to tell which ones are real, you should take all of them seriously.
The CPIM exams have a lot of questions that ask for your "best decisions" (i.e. how you will tackle a situation in a production environment). In fact, of the questions you will encounter in the exams, a significant portion of them requires that you pick the best possible options. These best options are often based on experience and best practices not easily found in the standard exam text books.
There are also plenty of questions on concepts and theories. These are the questions quite closely related to the published objectives of the official BOK. They mostly ask for the correct definitions of terms. For example, you will be tested heavily on the difference between MRP and MRP II. You will also be tested on your understanding of the way Master Scheduling works.
Our CPIM Study Guide goes the expert-advice way. Instead of giving you the hard facts, we give you information that covers the best practices. With these information, you will always be able to make the most appropriate expert judgment in the exams.

All 5 exams are covered. The TOCs
are listed below (with contents last
updated on 22 AUG 2009):
|
The module 1 exam covers only the basics. The exam attempts to test your basic understanding towards supply chain and the various PIM (production and inventory management) concepts. Many people consider module 1 as the easiest module among the five. In module 2, 3 and 4 you will frequently see topics from module 1 (as these modules tend to overlap heavily). It is therefore highly recommended that you reread the module 1 material when you are working on the other modules.
LATEST REVISION TOC may be viewed by clicking HERE.
Each module (except for the SMR module) comes with practice review questions, totaling 300+ questions altogether!
